Water is the most important factor in keeping betta fish properly in our home. Before buying a betta fish at home, you must prepare the right water for it. So today our topic is about Betta fish water.
That’s because the health and longevity of our betta fish depends on the water. Not only that, the right water helps to improve the colour of our fish.
But the question is what do we mean by the right betta fish water?
We have divided the topic into two parts, first is the ideal water for betta fish and second is what can harm our fish if the water is not right.
Ideal betta fish water :
Ideal water for betta fish here refers to water that has certain characteristics such as,
Potential of hydrogen in water :
We should always keep the potential of hydrogen (pH) of the fish water between 6.8 and 7.5. This is because as the potential of hydrogen (pH) of water increases, the alkalinity of the water increases and the lower the potential of hydrogen (pH) of water increases, the acidity of the water increases.
Hence 7 is called the neutral potential of hydrogen (pH) of water. So if we keep our betta fish water potential of hydrogen (pH) close to 7 our fish will be much healthier.
But the question is how do we know the pH of our water? Potential of hydrogen kits are available for purchase at pet shops or online. With that kit we can determine the pH of our water.
Total Dissolved Solids or TDS :
Ideal TDS for betta fish water is 200 to 250 parts per million (PPM).
Although 50 TDS less or more than 350 TDS can be harmful for our betta fish. If the TDS is too low or too high, our betta fish can get sick and suffer physical damage.
Now the question is how do we measure the TDS of our water?
TDS meter are available for purchase at pet shops or online. If we leave it in our fish water for some time, we will know the exact TDS of the water.
Betta fish water temperature :
The ideal water temperature for both fish is 75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit or 24° to 27° Celsius.
Is it necessary to control the water temperature of Betta fish?
The answer is yes. The immune system of our betta fish depends on the water temperature.
Water temperatures that are too high or too low are not good for our betta fish.
Not only that, ammonia and nitrite build up in our betta fish tank when the water temperature is too high or too low. That is because the nitrification process does not work properly in our fish tank at very high or low temperatures.
How to condition Betta fish water?
We have to adopt some methods to prepare Betta fish water. Although these methods are quite simple and with little effort we can create ideal water for betta fish.
Betta fish water preparation:
One thing we have to keep in mind is that very poor quality tap water is very harmful for our fish. We can use quality tap water or water available at pet stores for betta fish.
- After filling the water in the Betta fish tank, we must check the potential of hydrogen(PH) in the water.
- We must check the TDS or total dissolved solid of the water.
- It is best to increase the water temperature slightly if possible.
- If the pH and TDS of our water is correct then we need to mix a sufficient amount of solution with that water.
- Then keep the aquarium full of water for three to four days in a place where a small amount of sunlight reaches.
If we prepare the water for betta fish in this way, the chances of having any harmful substances in the water will be very less and as a result our fish will be very healthy.
Betta fish water solution :
Why should the solution be applied to the water of Betta fish? That’s because if we apply the solution in the water, the chances of harmful bacteria, fungi and algae in the water will be reduced.
Not only that, a proper solution applied to the water will reduce the chances of harmful minerals like copper, lead, ammonia, nitrite etc. in the water.
So by using the right solutions we can make our water ideal for betta fish.
Conclusion: Many times we have seen our betta fish reduce their food intake or stop eating. As a result, we have a very common question, why is my betta fish not eating? If we don’t have the right water for our betta fish then we can face similar problems.
If the pH, TDS and temperature of the water is not right then our betta fish will get sick very quickly and stop consuming food.
So having the right water is very important for our betta fish.
Warning : Any kind of pond water, rain water, distilled water, or completely purified water is absolutely not good for our betta fish. Not only that, poor quality tap water is not good for our fish.
Note : We can use drinkable tap water for our betta fish but we have to check that the pH and TDS of the water is correct or not.
Welcome to our website Aquarium Fish Zone. My name is Sagar Ghosh and I live in Kolkata. I am a science graduate.
I have kept fish in aquariums since I was very young. I loved seeing the colorful fish in the aquarium.
I have always tried to maintain and care for the fish properly. So me and my team members have created this website. As a result, we can provide you with accurate information about how aquarium fish are kept.
