betta fish water temperature

Controlling the water temperature is very important for betta fish. Betta fish are warm water fish. Betta fish water temperature is 75° to 80° Fahrenheit or 24° to 27° Celsius.

Why do you need to control the water temperature of Betta fish?

Betta fish originates from Southeast Asia, namely Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, etc.

Generally, the temperature in Southeast Asia is around 27 degrees Celsius. So we should try to keep the betta fish tank temperature between 24 and 27 degrees Celsius.

Not only that, if we keep the betta fish at its ideal temperature, the fish’s immunity, metabolic rate and physical growth are better or improved. As a result, the fish will be very healthy and have a long life.

But if the water temperature drops too much, our betta fish will become very lethargic and more likely to get sick day by day.

Not only that, very low temperatures will reduce the good bacteria in our betta fish tank and increase the chances of harmful fungus or algae growth.

When the temperature drops below 20 degrees Celsius, the nitrification process cannot take place properly, as a result increasing the chances of harmful ammonia and nitrite build-up in the tank.

Therefore, temperature control is very important for caring for betta fish

How to control betta fish water temperature ?

We can control the water temperature by using a heater in our betta fish water tank.

However, there are many things we should keep in mind before using a heater in our water tank

Generally we use two types of heaters in betta fish tanks.

The first one knows how to regulate its own temperature automatically.

And the second, if we keep it at a certain temperature ( 80° F), it will remain at that temperature forever.

Our preference, however, is a heater that works automatically.

Precautions to be taken before installing the heater:

It is very important to take some precautions before installing a heater in a betta fish tank.

Temperatures that are too low are not right for our betta fish just as temperatures that are too high are not right for our betta fish.

So we should keep a thermometer in the betta fish tank so that we can know the correct temperature.

But the heater that we take for betta fish tank must be electric shock proof And from a very good and reputed company.

Five key points to control water temperature for Betta fish:

Can we control the temperature by only using a heater in the betta fish tank? The correct answer is no.

Also we have some things to keep in mind like,

  • We will keep the fish tank in such a place where direct sunlight does not reach. That’s because if our betta fish tank is exposed to direct sunlight, the temperature of the betta fish tank will rise too much, which will damage our fish.
  • A Betta fish tank needs to have a filter system at all times to keep the water in the Betta fish tank constantly moving. If the size of our tank is large then the temperature is not likely to increase or decrease only in certain places. As a result, the water temperature of the whole tank is fixed.
  • Sudden changes in temperature cause shock to our betta fish. So whenever we change the water in the betta fish tank we only change 20 to 25 % of the water instead of changing the whole water at once.
  • Not only that, when we buy a new betta fish, we should keep the fish in our tank with the complete packet. So that the water temperature of the fish with the packet and the temperature of our tank will be equal and the fish will not get too upset.
  • The tank that we buy for our betta fish must be thermostatic. Otherwise the temperature of our tank water will depend too much on our room temperature.

Symptoms of a sudden drop in temperature in our betta fish tank:

A sudden drop in the water temperature of our betta fish will cause the fish to become lethargic. Not only that, when the temperature drops suddenly, the skin colour of our fish becomes much darker and our fish activity is greatly reduced.
