Can a male and female betta fish live together

Whenever we think about keeping fish in an aquarium many people advise us to keep betta fish because betta fish are very easy and less difficult to keep. But our question is can a male and female betta fish live together in a water tank?

The correct answer is no. We will always try not to keep a male and female betta fish together for long periods of time. But in some cases we can keep a female and male betta fish together. But there are certain procedures for that.

Things we should be aware of to keep a male and female betta fish together:

Some important roles of betta fish tank :

Male betta fish are highly territorial. So if we keep a male and female betta fish together in a small tank the results can be very bad. Even male betta fish can injure or kill female betta fish.

So we should always bring such an aquarium with at least 20 gallons of water to keep a male and female betta fish together.

Not only that, another thing to keep in mind, the aquarium must have a divider glass.

Not only that, there needs to be enough hiding space in the tank. So we need to use aquarium ornaments and aquarium plants in the betta fish tank. That’s because if there is a fight between the male and female fish, the female fish can go to that hiding place and hide for some time.

Proper procedure for keeping a male and female betta fish in the same tank:

If the question is Can a male and female betta fish live together ? Then we can try to keep one male and female betta fish in the same tank by adopting some proper method like,

We should prepare the aquarium water completely before putting a male and female Betta fish together.

Not only that, the divider glass in the aquarium must be used for the first 5 to 7 days. As a result, male and female betta fish create their own territory and get to know each other.

We should remove the aquarium divider glass after 5 to 7 days and observe if there is any fighting between them.

Although a little fight is very common between them, if they hurt each other too much then we should separate them again using divider glass. Again after seven days follow the same method and observe for some time.

If the male and female betta fish can live with each other, they will likely breed very easily.

Betta fish health and tank environment :

Before placing a male and female betta fish in the same aquarium, we must know their physical condition.

  • We should always try to keep two physically healthy fish in the same aquarium. That’s because if one of the two fish is sick, the healthy fish will injure the sick fish more, which can have very bad results.
  • So the tank environment is very important to keep the two fish physically and mentally healthy. If our betta fish are healthy then we can try to keep them together.
  • We should keep some plants in the tank which will greatly reduce the chances of oxygen deficiency in the tank.
  • We should change 20 to 25 percent of the tank water every 15 days. That’s because we control the amount of harmful substances in the tank, such as ammonia and nitrite.
  • Can we completely change the water in the betta fish tank? The answer is no. We never change 100% of the water in a betta fish tank.
  • That’s because some good bacteria grow in our aquarium every day, which improves the environment inside our tank. Not only that, these good bacteria help keep our fish healthy.
  • The water temperature in our tank is very important to our betta fish. If we can control the water temperature of our betta fish, our betta fish will be much healthier and better.
  • Not only that, the nitrification process is very good at that temperature which keeps ammonia under control in our tanks. The ideal temperature for our betta fish is 75 to 80 degrees F.

Sufficient food:

If we give less food to the betta fish, the male and female betta fish will fight over that food. So an adequate amount of food is very important for our betta fish.

Also if we feed too much food to our betta fish then the remaining food goes to the bottom of the tank and gets converted into ammonia which is harmful to our fish.

Therefore, before feeding betta fish, one should be aware of the information written on the packet.

Note: There are two things we must keep in mind before keeping two betta fish in the same aquarium, we can keep more than one female betta fish together or a male and female betta fish can be kept together.

Not only that, we can also keep other fish with Betta fish as betta fish tank mates by adopting the right method. but two male betta fish should never be kept together.
