Goldfish are usually the most attractive of all the fish we keep in the aquarium. Goldfish can easily form good bonds with people, and goldfish are very intelligent compared to other fish, so goldfish are very popular pets for us.
When keeping goldfish at home, a question that comes to us again and again is how long do goldfish live? How long a goldfish will live depends on many factors, but typically a goldfish lives for 4 to 5 years. Some goldfish live 10 to 15 years or more, depending on the environment.
How long do goldfish live?
How long a goldfish will live depends entirely on the health of the goldfish, and a proper environment improves goldfish health. So we should create the right environment to keep goldfish healthy and long life.
Tank for goldfish :
How healthy and how long a goldfish will live depends a lot on a proper tank. A goldfish needs a tank that can hold at least 20 gallons of water. But if the number of our goldfish is increasing then the water holding capacity of the tank should also be increased to 10 gallons.
But usually we see goldfish kept in a small bowl. Which is a very bad practice, because if we keep the goldfish in a small bowl, the water inside the bowl is likely to get contaminated very quickly. Harmful substances such as ammonia, nitrate and nitrite will quickly build up in the small bowl, causing the environment for the goldfish to deteriorate.
Not only that, goldfish are very active fish, so they move from one place to another very easily, but they don’t get much space in a small bowl or container. As a result of which their physical and mental stress is created. A large size tank is therefore essential for goldfish health and longevity.
Water for goldfish :
Using the right water is very important for our goldfish. Generally, the potential of hydrogen (pH) in goldfish water should be between 6.5 and 7.5. Ideal TDS for goldfish water should be between 100 and 250.
If we can keep the pH and TDS level of the goldfish water right then the chances of our goldfish getting sick will be greatly reduced. But generally we use tap water for goldfish, its pH and TDS levels are very important to know.
Water temperature :
The ideal water temperature for goldfish is 74° to 80°F. If we live in a tropical climate, our water temperature will rise slightly, so we don’t need a heater for our goldfish aquarium.
But if we live in a place where, there is a great difference in temperature between day and night, or in places where the temperature is very low, a heater is a very necessary item.
If our goldfish’s water temperature drops too much, the goldfish’s immune system will become very weak and will be easily attacked by various harmful bacteria and fungi. So controlling the water temperature will greatly improve the immunity of our goldfish and our goldfish will live longer.
Filter for goldfish :
We should always use filters in goldfish tanks. Excess food and waste from our goldfish accumulates at the bottom of the tank, which is then converted to ammonia. This ammonia is very harmful to our fish.
Filters help absorb excess food and waste that accumulates at the bottom of the aquarium. We also found that the filter had very small pores, which contained a lot of good bacteria. These bacteria help convert ammonia first to nitrite and then to nitrate. This entire process is called the nitrogen cycle.
So if we use a bio filter in our aquarium, the chance of ammonia build-up will be greatly reduced. As a result, our goldfish will be very healthy and live longer.
Plant for goldfish tank :
Aquatic plants play a special role in goldfish tanks, because if we use aquatic plants in the tank, the amount of oxygen in the tank is controlled. As a result, the possibility of lack of oxygen in the aquarium is greatly reduced.
Not only this, goldfish like to hide behind various aquatic plants which help them to be stress free. Aquatic plants also indirectly help in the nitrogen cycle in the aquarium. So using aquatic plants in the goldfish aquarium, the aquarium environment is much improved and the chances of our goldfish getting sick is greatly reduced.
Food for goldfish :
Goldfish need a daily diet with adequate amounts of protein, fiber and fat. Not only that, goldfish need an adequate amount of vitamins and minerals in their diet.
Generally we feed goldfish with pellets, flakes, frozen food and live food. These mentioned foods keep goldfish very healthy and do not suffer from nutritional deficiency.
But one thing we should always keep in mind is that goldfish should always be given enough food, not too much and not too little. We feed the goldfish as much food as our goldfish can eat within one to two minutes.
If we see that our goldfish cannot eat the whole food within 2 minutes then we will reduce the amount of food in the next time. In this same manner we can feed our goldfish in the morning, afternoon and night. Although each food packet clearly states how much food we should give to our goldfish.
Goldfish lifespan:
Generally a goldfish can live for 4 to 5 years or more if we take proper care of our goldfish. But if we use a large tank for our goldfish and try to improve the environment of the goldfish aquarium, our goldfish can live up to 10 to 15 years.
Generally, the life cycle of goldfish is as follows:
- Goldfish eggs hatch within 4 to 5 days of laying.
- Goldfish fry reach 1 to 2 inches in size in three to four months, and are well-formed and brightly colored.
- Properly cared for, a goldfish becomes suitable for breeding within 1.5 to 2 years.
- The right environment plays a particularly important role in goldfish breeding. However, given the right environment, a female goldfish takes seven days to form eggs after mating.
This is exactly how the goldfish life cycle process continues. Although goldfish breeding is a complex process for which we need to have a proper understanding of goldfish care.
Welcome to our website Aquarium Fish Zone. My name is Sagar Ghosh and I live in Kolkata. I am a science graduate.
I have kept fish in aquariums since I was very young. I loved seeing the colorful fish in the aquarium.
I have always tried to maintain and care for the fish properly. So me and my team members have created this website. As a result, we can provide you with accurate information about how aquarium fish are kept.
